Delicious Creamy Potato Soup Recipe

Today I am sharing with you my Creamy Potato Soup Recipe that has been in the works for some time now. I am a huge fan of a good potato soup and I have tried many recipes over the years and they just weren't that perfect soup that I have been looking for. After so many failed attempts I began putting together my own recipe and I now have that perfect Creamy Potato Soup that I had been looking for. I hope you have a chance to try it out through the next few cold months and enjoy it just as much as I do.

Creamy Potato Soup Recipe

7 medium size potatoes
1 small yellow onion, minced
4 cans of chicken broth
2 cups water
3/4 cups flour
1 3/4 cups heavy cream (or I have used whole milk or fat free milk as well)
2 sticks of salted butter
1/2 tsp celery salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp sugar

Shredded cheese
Bacon broken into bits
Green onions chopped

Peel and cut potatoes into bite size pieces.
Boil potatoes in a large pot until they are cooked enough to poke a fork through but not too mushy. Drain potatoes and set aside.
In the large pot melt the butter on medium-low heat.
Add onion and stir until they are cooked.
Add flour and stir while it cooks for about 2 minutes.
Add Chicken broth, water, celery salt, pepper, basil and sugar.
Slowly add the heavy cream.
Carefully add the potatoes.
Stir and simmer for about 10 minutes.
Add more salt and pepper as you desire.
Serve, sprinkle with toppings and ENJOY!

Thanks for visiting,

  1. Oh my, your soup sounds so good (a bit fattening tho)I'll have to see if I can find some less fattening substitutes for some of ingredients.
I am a tater soup lover. I have a good recipe from my Mother and her Mother, haven't made it in long time.
Just going to have to try yours first. (Cause I can't find family recipe). Been looking for some different foods to make, getting tired of same old stuff. We like one pot meals, they go further and are usually pretty nutritious, tasty and not fattening, just healthy.
We're two seniors that don't have a lot of money (let alone "any" after paying bills now days),that really enjoy eating. Sure glad you posted this soup as it's cold here (west of Grand Junction, CO) and snow all over the place with more to come in next day or two. Tallyho

    1. Thank you. Yes the heavy cream is fattening but I was looking for a thick creamy soup so I knew it was going to be fattening. Its one of those soups that you only have every once in awhile :)

Hope you have a chance to try it. I am sure you can change the heavy cream for milk to have less fat.

  2. Just a thought on a substitution for heavy cream. I almost always use evaporated milk instead. You can get cans of that either low fat or fat free.

  3. This looks delicious, a bit indulgent yes! But delicious!

    Thanks for sharing x

    1. Thank you :) Yes it is pretty dangerous but oh so good!

  4. I really want a big bowl of this right now - pinning :) I will definitely be making this soon!

  7. Sounds good! Although I'd have to take out the celery - I have such an aversion to that stuff!!
